A Voice For The Animals. "The great humanitarian Gandhi had a dream about peace and love for all living things", writes SPCA Auckland Executive Director Bob Kerridge. Gandhi’s vision was, in its day, the proverbial “impossible dream”, bringing humans and animals together in a spirit of oneness. He never saw it fulfilled, but his dream made us think a little more deeply so we, too, could dream on. “We can, and must, dream on,” says Bob.

Animal Cruelty Goes Political This year could mark the dawn of a new era in animal welfare as the claws really come out against animal cruelty. SPCA Auckland is leading the way with an impressive list of pro bono prosecutors who will seek punishment to fit the crimes for those who abuse animals. And Tauranga MP Simon Bridges has taken the fight to Parliament, seeking harsher penalties for animal abusers.

A Mission For Life “I believe the SPCA should have a single bottom line and that is saving lives,” says national SPCA Chief Executive Robyn Kippenberger. “The greatest cruelty is to kill an animal because it is surplus to need.” And so SPCA Auckland Executive Director Bob Kerridge has agreed to spearhead a campaign called Saving Lives which will focus the efforts of SPCA branches around the country on achieving Robyn’s goal by the end of 2010.

Second Chance For Love Love was in the air at the SPCA Auckland Animal Village on Valentines Day weekend when more than 100 animals went to adoring new “parents” at the 2010 Hill’s Second Chance for Love Adoptathon.

Goodbye, Dear Assisi On Thursday, December 17, 2009, we learned from Animals Asia founder Jill Robinson that Assisi, the Chinese moon bear rescued with the help of Animals’ Voice readers’ generosity, had died. In this issue, Jill writes about “sharing our deep love and respect for a happy, contented soul who walked the kingdom of his new days in wonder at every step.”
